Celebrating women in mathematics 2026: film projection and satellite event

Women in Mathematics, May 12th main event:

In conjunction with the 250th anniversary of Sophie Germain's birth, we will show the French film "Je suis Sophie Germain/I am Sophie Germain" (English subtitles) by courtesy of the May12 committee.

Before and after the film, it will be possible to visit the exhibition "Remember Maryam Mirzakhani", situated at the Math department (very close to the room for the movie). This is a permanent exhibition hosted under permission of the May12 committee.

Seminar by Prof. Vesna Todorčević, Mathematical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts
Title: Mathematics and Music

Abstract: We will survey the work of the seminar "Mathematics and Music”, which was founded in 2018 and has since been held regularly by the Mathematical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Belgrade. It was initially conceived to explore connections between mathematics and music existing from the very beginnings of both disciplines. In addition to the mathematical aspects of music theory, the topics presented have included, among others, the concepts of harmony, melody, rhythm, and algorithmic composition. Drawing on the connections between mathematics, music, and computer science, the Seminar is also devoted to the popularization of mathematics. The lecturers, as well as the participants of the Seminar, come from a very wide array of academic and artistic fields: they are mathematicians, musicologists and musicians, composers, computer scientists and programmers, philosophers and theologians, classicists and historians of science, visual artists and writers. We will also say something about the relations of mathematics with other forms of art and philosophical thought.
