Description and practical details

International Women in Maths Day celebrates the achievements of female mathematicians annually on 12 May, in honour of mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to be awarded the Fields Medal for Mathematics.  Women in Mathematics Day is a significant day for all mathematicians and is an important opportunity to both celebrate women and gender diverse mathematicians and to highlight the ongoing gender inequity in the discipline.  At UQ, the School of Mathematics and Physics (SMP) is striving to improve gender diversity.  SMP has held May 12th events in the past, including with support of WIMSIG, and these events have provided excellent opportunities for women in our school to meet with each other and discuss common goals and ideas. Our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Committee will support the logistics of the day and provide prizes for the trivia portion of the event.  The EDI committee has a subcommittee dedicated to Celebrating Diversity and we are hoping to approach this event using an EDI lens that makes this event a valuable, educational, and inclusive experience for all our colleagues and students (including men).  SMP will celebrate this day by holding an afternoon event on Friday 10 May.
