Description and practical details

Let's celebrate International Women in Mathematics Day next Sunday afternoon, May 12, 2024, from 16:30 at the Metropol Kino, in Brunnenstraße 20, 40223 Düsseldorf.

Short Film Screening

The event will open with screenings of two short films featuring the only women Fields Medalists:

  • Maryam Mirzakhani was awarded the Fields Medal in 2014 for her outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces.
  • Maryna Viazovska was awarded the Fields Medal in 2022 for her proof that the E8 lattice provides the densest packing of identical spheres in eight dimensions, and for her contributions to related extremal problems and interpolation problems in Fourier analysis.

The program will continue with two animated documentary mini-series created by Denis Van Waerebeke, with the help of Olga Paris-Romaskevich, a researcher at the Marseille Institute of Mathematics and a former member of the May 12 initiative group:

  • "Alicia Boole in the Land of Polytopes"
  • "Kovalevskaya's Spinning Top"

The screening session will conclude with the film "Olga Ladyzhenskaya", directed by Ekaterina Eremenko, which tells the story of the world-famous mathematician whose work influenced the development of modern mathematical physics.

Panel Discussion

We are pleased to announce a panel discussion on the topic of women in mathematics and the gender gap within and outside academia. We would like to thank our speakers for graciously accepting our invitation to share their experiences and opinions:
