Continuing the tradition of celebrating the 'May12 Celebration of Women in Mathematics" with a talk on the life and work of a women mathematician, after Maryam Mirzakhani (2014 Fields Medalist) in May 2022, Marina Ratner (in May 2023) and Maryna Viazowska (2022 Fields Medalist) in May 2024, we are please to announce this year a talk on the life and work of Emmy Nother, accessible to Bachelor and Master students in Math (and not only).

Emmy Noether, from algebra to physics
lecture given by Cristina Caraci (Geneva)
---------------------------------------------------------------
Abstract:
How are symmetries and conservation laws in physics connected? Why this relation is important for theoretical physicists and mathematicians?
In this talk, accessible to all bachelor students, we will present Emmy Noether's contributions in different fields of mathematics, and explain how the work of an algebraist had a crucial role also in mathematical physics.
Emmy Noether (1882-1935) has been defined 'the mother of modern algebra' and was the first woman mathematician to give a plenary invited talk at an International Congress of Mathematicians (at the ICM which took place in 1932 in Zurich).
