As part of the May12 Initiative, an online colloquium talk by Prof. Neela Nataraj. The target audience for this presentation is undergraduate and postgraduate students in Mathematics.
Title: A Short Introduction To The Finite Element Method
Abstract: The finite element method (FEM), introduced by engineers in the late 1950s and 1960s, is a numerical technique employed to solve problems described by ordinary and partial differential equations with appropriate boundary /initial conditions and problems involving functional minimization. The initial part of the talk will focus on the application of FEM to two-point boundary value problems, providing insights from both mathematical and engineering viewpoints. The subsequent part will discuss a range of linear and nonlinear problems in different applications where FEM has proven to be successful.
