The Seminar for Mathematics and Music, as part of the celebration of Women in Mathematics Day on May 12, will host a special screening of the film Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani at the Mathematical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, with the kind support of ZALA Films and the May 12 Coordination Group.
This acclaimed documentary explores the life and legacy of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman - and the first Iranian - to be awarded the prestigious Fields Medal in mathematics. Tracing her path from a curious young girl in Tehran to a renowned professor at Stanford University, the film highlights her groundbreaking contributions to geometry and dynamical systems. Featuring interviews with colleagues, students, and archival footage, the documentary offers an intimate portrait of a brilliant and creative mind, while also reflecting on the broader significance of her achievements for women in science and mathematics worldwide.
We warmly invite all those interested in the history, impact, and future of women in mathematics to join us for this inspiring event.
