Description and practical details

In line with the commemoration of the birthday of woman mathematician Prof. Maryam Mirzakhani and the National Awakening Day of May 20 at the year 2025 in Indonesia, the Study Center of Modelling and Computation Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Padjadjaran University together with the Indonesian Mathematical Society (IndoMS) branch of West Java, held a webinar which was carried out in a hybrid manner. This webinar aims to develop the study of Ethnomathematics which is part of the Mathematical Subject Classification (MSC) 2020 with code 01A107 and Ethno-informatics, especially for the study of Mathematics in culture applied in Sundanese culture and Acehnese culture in Indonesia. The speakers at this webinar are Prof. Dr. Budi Nurani Ruchjana, MS, (Padajdajaran University) Dr. Salmawaty Arif, M.Sc.  (Syiah Kuala University) and Prof. Dr. Atje Setiawan Abdullah, MS, M.Kom. (Padjadjaran University), all  of them are a member of the Indoensian Mathematical Society (IndoMS)

Budi Nurani Ruchjana, discusses Stochastic Modeling based on Ethnomathematics to model the paddy farming process in the Sunda region West Java Indonesia. The research method is Ethnography.  The study of stochastic modeling starts from the process of providing paddy seeds to harvest based on the Sundanese cultural approach that applies in the West Java community in Indonesia using a descriptive statistical approach and linear regression analysis. In this webinar, the SOWISO program package from Amsterdam was introduced for data processing, so that participants can easily process data and interpret the results to describe the modeling procedure based on Ethnomathematics.

Salmawaty Arif, developed the graphical simulations of some Acehnese traditional crafts in Aceh Indonesia whichwere sketched in polar coordinates. In the polar coordinate system, each point is represented bythe distance from the point of origin and the angle from the positive x-axis. Some graphical models of polar equations can be developed to plot the artistic pattern of the crafts which contain circular and symmetric properties. The picture simulations were done by using GeoGebra software application. Here the graphical results of some Acehnese crafts were sketched, namely for some traditional fans and ornaments to provide an alternative for the contemporary motives of fabrics.

Atje Setiawan Abdullah proposes an Ethno-informatics for toponymy in West Java region using Spatial Data Mining.

The aims of this webinar are:

1. Introducing Ethnomathematics fand Ethno-informatics for mathematicians, lecturer or teacher, student, and society

2. Applying Ethnomathematics of Sundanese and Acehnese culture of Indonesia using the SOWISO, and GeoGebra program packages and Ethno-informatics by means Java Programming.

3.Increasing active participation from participants to preserve cultivation using an Ethnomathematics and Ethno-informatics approach

In this webinar, participants will be given a brief theoretical and practical discussion in the application of Ethnomathematics  and Ethno-informatics using the available program packages. Participants can also apply the Ethnomathematics and Ethno-informatics approach according to the culture in their respective regions. The results of this webinar are expected to contribute to nature in supporting the preservation of tangible and intangible culture in Indonesia and the world.
