Our 6th grade students will watch the movie Aspire To Inspire: Women in Mathematics on May 13th during morning homeroom. The same week our Middle School will also have a Problem of the Week that features Sophie Germain primes.
Problem of the week
May 12th is International Women in Mathematics Day! This week’s problem is in honor of Sophie Germain, a French Mathematician and Scientist.
A prime number is a number that is only divisible by itself and 1. A Sophie Germain prime is a prime number p such that 2p+1 is also prime.
For example, 3 is a Sophie Germain prime because 3 is a prime number and two times three plus one is 7 and 7 is a prime number.
Following similar logic, a prime number p is a double Sophie Germain prime if 2p+1 is not just prime, but also a Sophie Germain prime.
For example, 3 is not a double Sophie Germain prime because, even though 3 and 2x3+1 are prime, 2x7+1=15, and 15 is not a prime number.
Find all prime numbers smaller than 100 that are double Sophie Germain primes.
