As part of the international celebration of Women in Mathematics, the Department of Mathematics and Physics at Linnaeus University, Sweden, hosts a screening of the documentary Secrets of the Surface about the first female Fields Medalist, Maryam Mirzakhani.

May12 is an international initiative celebrating women in mathematics and takes place every year around the world on May 12, the birthday of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to receive the prestigious Fields Medal.

Maryam Mirzakhani was an Iranian mathematician and Professor of Mathematics at Stanford University. She was one of the world’s leading experts in geometry and dynamical systems. Her work, together with her life and career, continues to inspire people around the world to pursue their dreams in mathematics and science.

In 2014, Maryam Mirzakhani was awarded the Fields Medal for her outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces, becoming the first woman, and the first Iranian, to be recognized for her mathematical achievements by the top mathematical prize.
