ICMS is excited to be hosting an online screening of Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani. This one-hour documentary examines the life and mathematical work of Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian immigrant to the US, who in 2014 became the first woman and first Iranian to be honoured with the Fields Medal: mathematics’ highest prize. Mirzakhani sadly died of breast cancer in 2017, at the age of 40.
In the film, interviews with colleagues, collaborators and students are shown alongside animated sequences outlining Mirzakhani’s contributions and the deep impact of her achievements.
