May 12 was the birthday of Maryam Mirzakhani (1977 - 2017), an Iranian mathematician and professor at Stanford University. She worked on geometry and dynamical systems and in 2014 she was the first woman to win the FIelds medal (the “Nobel prize of mathematics”). In her memory, May 12 was chosen as a day to globally celebrate women in mathematics.
The Mathematical Institute is therefore organising an event on May 12, 2022. Students, staff and other interested people are all very welcome!
The programme consists of two parts and will be as follows:
15.15: Welcome in KGB Pangea.
15.30 - 16.30: Screening of the documentary “Secrets of the surface” about Maryam Mirzakhani (http://www.zalafilms.com/secrets/) in KBG Pangea
16.30 - 17.00: Break and discussion.
17.00 - 18.30: Participating in the online panel “How to build a career in math” hosted by MSRI. (https://www.msri.org/workshops/1044) in MIN 018.
18.30 - 19.00: Discussion and closing.
At both parts of the programma some drinks and snacks will be served. It is certainly possible to only attend one of the two activities. The documentary is interesting and accessible to everyone; the panel is mostly aimed at master’s students and graduate students.
We look forward to seeing you on May 12!
