May 12 was the birthday of Maryam Mirzakhani (1977 - 2017), an Iranian mathematician and professor at Stanford University. She worked on geometry and dynamical systems and in 2014 she was the first woman to win the FIelds medal (the “Nobel prize of mathematics”). In her memory, May 12 was chosen as a day to globally celebrate women in mathematics.
The Mathematical Institute is therefore organising an event on May 12, 2022. Students, staff and other interested people are all very welcome!
The programme consists of two parts and will be as follows:

The documentary film Secrets of the Surface by George Csicsery will be available for view by students and staff of the
Mathematics Department of the Université de Lille in France.
The School of Mathematics and Statistics is hosting an in-person (and online) celebration for International Woman's Mathematics Day!
