The Seminar for Mathematics and Music, as part of the celebration of Women in Mathematics Day on May 12, will host a special screening of the film Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani at the Mathematical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, with the kind support of ZALA Films and the May 12 Coordination Group.
The Mirzakhani Society (Oxford Women in Maths) will be hosting a screening of 'Hidden Figures' in the maths department, in collaboration with The Invariants (Oxford Maths Society). This event will be open to all and aims to inspire conversation about women in maths who have historically been overlooked, and barriers women may still face to success. The movie screening will be followed by pizza and cupcakes in an informal setting.
We will hold a journey of talks by female mathematicians. The aim is for speakers to be from a variety of levels/career stages, and has fostered engagement by inviting guest speakers and strengthened the relationship between students and professors by facilitating discussions on mathematics and STEAM approach, and inspiring academic growth. Talks will be primarily research oriented, but accessible to undergraduates, and with an emphasis on why the person chose to study maths and/or pursue a career in maths, and what motivates them about their research.
We will watch the movie "Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani" together with students and colleagues from our university. Afterwards, there will be panel discussions on being a mathematician in academia and industry, accompanied by coffee and cakes.
We are organizing an event for students and colleagues in cooperation with the Khorezm Mamun Academy and the V.I. Romanovskiy Institute of Mathematics. To begin, Zebo Egamberganova will give a 15-minute presentation titled “Their Numbers, Their Stories: Women in Math.” Following that, we will watch the documentary Journeys of Black Mathematicians, and afterward, there will be panel discussions on the topic of being a mathematician in academia.

We'll have a happy hour at de zwarte doos from 17:00-18:30. The screening will run from 18:30-19:30 in de zwarte doos filmhuis.

12 May is International Women in Mathematics Day. Since 2019, it has commemorated the important role of female mathematicians in their field. To mark this occasion the Department is showing a portrait of the Russian mathematician Olga Ladyzhenskaya.
