Gracias a una invitación de la UMA (Unión Matemática Argentina) nos hemos sumado este año a la celebración del  Día de las Mujeres en Matemática (https://may12.womeninmaths.org/).

Este evento mundial se celebra todos los años recordando el día del nacimiento de Maryam Mirzakhani, matemática iraní fallecida en 2017, quien fue la primera mujer en ser galardonada con la medalla Fields (uno de los máximos premios que otorga la comunidad a sus miembros más destacados).

We will be screening the film 'The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani' from 6:30.

In commemoration of the International Day of Women in Mathematics, we are organizing a screening of the movies "Kovalevskaia’s Spinning Top"  and "Alicia Boole in the Land of Polytopes". The screening will be held at Novosibirsk State University on May 18, 2024.

preceded by tea, cake and coffee in the Central Core from 1.45pm.

All Y7&8 students will be watching the movie "Hidden Figures" and then have a discussion about why it is important that everyone's contributions can be important and to encourage an open, welcoming and inclusive work environment for everybody.

The Discipline of Mathematics and the UWI Math Club celebrate Women in Mathematics on Monday, 13^th May.

Part of the celebration will be a public screening of the short documentaries "Journeys of Women in Mathematics", "Alicia Boole in the land of polytopes" and "Kovalevskaya' Spinning Top" on May 13 at 15:00 pm in the BCS Demonstration Room.

La actividad que haremos es pasar dos documentales animados:

"Alicia Boole en la tierra de los politopos"  y "El trompo de Kovaleskaya" de Denis Van Waerebeke en cooperación con Olga Paris-Romaskevich.

Picture a Scientist started from exploring reports in the late 1990s that exposed significant gender inequity across the sciences. As we dug into the data and spoke with dozens of scientists, we realized the vast extent of the challenges facing women and minority scientists. Despite groundbreaking efforts by the courageous scientists featured in the film and elsewhere, systemic gender bias and racism persist.
