May 12 marks the birthday of Maryam Mirzakhani - the first female Field Medallist who sadly passed away in 2017, whom you will get to know deeper at our event. Since 2019, it has been celebrated as International Women in Mathematics Day all around the globe, providing an opportunity to proclaim female mathematicians' achievements and inspire others wishing to walk down the same path.
The Mathematics Department at St. Edward's College, MALTA, is happy to announce the screening of a mathematics documentary on Wednesday the 14th of May.
On May the 12th, the international mathematics community celebrates Women in Mathematics Day. It is also the date of birth of the Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani: the first woman to have been honoured by mathematics' highest prize, the Fields Medal. This happened in 2014. Unfortunately, Maryam died of breast cancer 3 years later, at age 40.
Everyone interested is welcome to join the screening of the documentary film Secrets of the surface: the Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani. Filmed in Canada, Iran, and the United States, the film examines the life and mathematical work of Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian immigrant to the United States who became a superstar in her field. In 2014, she was both the first woman and the first Iranian to be honored by mathematics’ highest prize, the Fields Medal. The event is hosted by Alex Tullini and Zahra Mohammadi Khangheshalghi.
12 Mayıs'ta Konak Bilim ve Sanat Merkezi öğrencileri Matematik Köyü'ne bir gezi düzenleyecekler. Bu gezinin akşamında, 12 Mayıs Dünya Kadın Matematikçiler Günü'nde öğrencilerle birlikte "Yüzeyin Sırları: Maryam Mirzakhani'nin Matematiksel Vizyonu" filmi izlenecek.
We will meet in the MARC (Math 175) at 11 am to celebrate Women in Mathematics with Pizza, community time and the projection of SECRETS OF THE SURFACE: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani.
As a part of the international celebration of women in mathematics, the UConn AWM student chapter hosts a screening of the documentary about the first female Fields medalist Maryam Mirzakhani. The movie screening will be preceded by an introduction given by Rachel Bailey of Bentley University, and followed by an informal networking gathering.
In commemoration of International Women's Day in Mathematics, two documentaries will be screened: “The Journeys of Black Mathematics: Forging Resilience” (2024) and “The Journeys of Black Mathematics: Creating Pathways” (2025), sent courtesy of ZALA Films. This activity will take place on May 9 at the Facultad de Ciencias Aplicadas a la Industria (FCAI) of the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. The organization is in charge of the Women, Gender and Diversity Area and the Department of Physics and Mathematics.
In honour of International Women in Mathematics Day on May 12th and to kick off the beginning of the summer semester, Sci-Space will be hosting a movie screening and social of "Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani"
